@dysfun haha, that's so 20th century computing my friend. Now we don't want better, faster, cheaper. We want worse, slower and more expensive.

I know, right? It's the one thing that would make me think an orbital hotel + restaurant was a good idea. Except I have no idea about how to eat it.
@david_chisnall @http_error_418 @timixretroplays I would start by making a hole in one spot, then eat the filling with a spoon, expanding the hole as I go.
US Admiral Samuel J. Paparo wins the internet this week.
@randahl Shit! He has attack plans for the Martians???!!! Why didn't the guy ask about those in follow up??????

Think social tipping points.
Gay marriage seemed impossible, right up until it was legalised.
ADHD, the autism spectrum, and lots of other things are now widely accepted as prevalent. Why? Because we talk about them more.
We need to start talking about stuff. The polls say that we are very likely to find agreement in the people we talk to! The polls also say that we don't expect that. So let's start talking.
@vaurora yikes!! I’ll be sure to keep an eye on it
@CatherineFlick the symptoms were "feeling of impending doom" "feeling like you are dying" and "feeling like lying down and never moving again" in addition to the fever and swelling
I'l never understand conferences that invite people to speak, but ask them to send their slides in advance so that they can review them. You either trust me or not.
@matuzo Why does trust need to come into it when verification/review are lower risk? Particularly if the aspects being reviewed for are positive (like inclusion and access).
Shared infrastructure is how the Fediverse can grow without recreating enshittified platform silos.
We’re excited to share that Bonfire is working with Mastodon on two critical areas of Fediverse infrastructure: remote media storage and automated content detection.
Built around open Fediverse Auxiliary Service Provider (FASP) specifications, this work will help platforms connect to shared services instead of each having to build and operate the same capabilities alone.
Our aim is to make these capabilities open, interoperable, and available for any federated server to adopt.
A big thank you to @Mastodon@mastodon.social team for involving us in this work. We’re looking forward to building together and sharing what we learn along the way.

welp, I got as far as the X-ray room vestibule, then an emergency case came in so I'm back in the waiting area again! It'll probably be another hour now. (Here for an invasive angiogram and possible stent.)
@cstross 🍀
@firesidefedi is there a replacement for https://links.firesidefedi.live/ available?
@Lioh@social.anoxinon.de Excellent question. I keep forgetting to work on that. Adding it to my list, but I'm literally testing a software right now that would replace it. I'll probably put at links.btfree.social .
Junior tech jobs are rare right now, so I was delighted to see the Welsh Government is hiring a Digital Data + Tech Apprentice. No experience needed!
2 year post, £27k, apply by 28/09/2026
Must be at least 16 years old, but there's no upper age limit!
Such fantastic news!

This is interesting for a few reasons.Air Marshalls are specially trained officers who fly in plainclothes on regular rights, mostly to be ready to intervene during a hijacking, etc. They are not normally part of this sort of criminal investigation, except in very special cirucmstances.
I assume shoulder surfing passwords is a fairly specialized skill to do well. Are air marshals routinely trained to do this? If so, it suggests they have rather different roles than we've been led to believe.
@mattblaze I assume your aware of how actual low level criminals do this? Think Darknet Diaries has interviewed at least one person that would get passwords from people in bars etc then steal their phones.
Another example of the shocking inefficiency of everything involving genAI: developer claims DLSS5 "improves the character lighting model" while later mentioning that it HALVES THE FRAMERATE.
My brother in computer development, there are excellent lighting models available if you are willing to accept *doubling the frame time on a last-generation GPU*. Especially so if you're restricting yourself to foreground characters. None of them requires proprietary slop.
